CoffeeWe were in Toronto on the weekend and I stopped by the Green Beanery. It was a bit mixed up because they were in the process of moving. I ended up at their old store and did not know it was in the basement of a church. Was standing right in front of the church but had no idea it was in there. I thought I was in the wrong place. Then I called 411 from a payphone and got their number, but they were not answering. As I was to find out, because they are setting up in their new (totally awesome) store on the corner of Bloor and Bathurst.

Fortunately, I recognised the voice on the voicemail as the system that I actually help develop at Nortel. And I knew a few back-door tricks to get through to someone :-) So I managed to get through to a human and found out about their new store. But it was still very much under renovation so while I did get my toys, I did not get all the beans I'd wanted.

CoffeeOn my last coffee order when I got the Aeropress I went cheap and also bought 4 x 5lb - 2 of those 4 were 'bargain' coffees for about 15 or 16 bucks for 5 lbs (also got a Etheopian Yirgacheff for about twice that)

At first I didn't like the Elephant bean foremost because I had to over-roast it due to it's large size (as the name may suggest). But the first cup I thought "mmmm, very smooth and chocolaty" and it wasn't bitter at all which is something I've read is a problem with a lot of the bargain varietals. I'm enjoying it very much.

CoffeeBack in the spring time shortly after I started roasting, my wife happened to mention to a friend of hers what I was doing, and the friend became interested. She went out to one of the second-hand stores and picked up a West Bend Poppery II (WB2) and gave it a try. The spring thaw was well in swing and we were getting very sunny 15C days at the time. Unfortunately it seemed that even after leaving the beans in for 15 minutes she got nowhere. It just wouldn't roast. Her popper was pooped-out.

After several email exchanges I determined that she seemed to be doing everything right, and that perhaps it was time to haul out one of my WB2s and see how well they worked, since I'd never tried one before. I'd only dealt with the Popcorn Pumper. Sure enough, my WB2 couldn't roast either, so I just set it aside and let her know I'd had the same problem. And it sat there next to my Popcorn Pumper until a few weeks ago when out of curiousity I'd hauled it out again to try.

CoffeeLast Thursday I packed the boys into the car and headed to Nova Scotia. My wife - a stay-at-home mom - stayed in Ottawa by herself. This was her much-needed vacation from the kids. I took my popper/roaster with me as well as 3kg of green beans. That's a lot of beans for a short 9 day trip, but I was hoping to get my brother and his wife hooked on roasting and was planning on leaving the roaster and beans with them after staying at their place a few days.

The first half of the trip went well, and sure enough after 4 days of my coffee they were hooked and wanted me to leave the roaster and beans with them. So I roasted up a jar full of Sumatran for myself and took them with me to my parents' house, where I'd be staying for the balance of my trip. Of course, completely forgetting that they wouldn't have a coffee mill to grind the beans with. And that's one thing I didn't take with.

CoffeeAfter trying home-roasted coffee at Big Strange New Brunswick Brew last June and tasting for myself what an incredible taste difference there is to home roast, and after listening to the guys on the brewers' list talk about different techniques and so forth, I knew it was something I had to try. I love coffee. A lot. And this just seemed to be something that goes so perfectly with homebrewing.

So a while back I bought a used hot air corn popper from a guy at work - though I ended up keeping it at work to make popcorn for snacks! A couple of months later and I still hadn't gotten around to buying my green beans, until today. I got home from work and had to listen to my wife complain about me using up all the coffee yesterday and not telling her so she could pick some up while she was out on errands this morning. So I threw my oldest son in the car and off we went to Aladdin over in Gatineau.
