When I was last in Koeln in the summer of 2000, I made many trips to Deutz on the other side of the river, because I had discovered Lommerzheim, one of the best-kept secrets of the Cologne bar scene. They served only Päffgen Köslch, had a very limited menu, and the place was ramshackle run-down. But it had a cult following like none other, and is one of those things you just wouldn't understand unless you'd been there.
The place left such an incredible impression on me that when I returned from that trip, I immediately made up a website about Lommerzheim. For a while I even owned the lommerzheim.com domain name, though that is no longer the case. And since then I'd drop by the unofficial home of Lommerzheim on the web from time-to-time just to relive some fond memories. Just now I dropped by and found only "Danke Lommi". Some quick googling and I discovered that Herr Lommerzheim passed away in June of this year, at the age of 74.

I was recently in Düsseldorf, within a half hour of Cologne, and asked for a Kölsch. I was informed, as only a German waitress can inform you, that in Düsseldorf the bier is alt, and if I want a Kölsch the train station was only two blocks away!

Germany's Economy and Labour Minister Wolfgang Clement has proven himself in helping retain his country's place as the world's second most beer-consuming nation. Clement was attending a Beer Brewers' Association celebration event for the 487th anniversary of the Reinheitsgebot, when he won a bet and downed a regular 0,2l Kölsch
in only 1.5 seconds.
"You have to push your uvula back, then the beer flows directly down your throat. You can't enjoy the taste, but it gets there fast." Clement said. "I'll down a 0.2 litre glass of Koelsch faster than all of you can drink a schnapps".

I've been trying to build a water profile for my ProMash software for the city of Koeln. I have been unsuccessful from my periodical & online research.
What I do know is that the brewing water is relatively soft with low levels of calcium, magnesium, & biCarbonates. Does anyone know the water hardness (e.g. CaCO3 mg/L) of one of the world's greatest brewing mecca's? Perhaps Bodensatz can help? PROST! Beertracker 2 comments

Dear Beer-Lovers,
I want to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Of course I will celebrate it with typical German Christmas food and with ( a lot of ?? ) cold Zunft Kölsch. Cheers Jens 1 comments

Is there a site those neat little Koelsch glasses can be procured from? My wife and I really liked them when we went to Cologne last April. We did bring back some Heineken glasses from Amsterdam. Miller tastes better when drunk from a Heineken glass. 5 comments

| In the middle is an older glass |
|
There is presently an uproar in Cologne over the new taller Stangen that have recently been introduced by the breweries. Though taller than the older glasses, they are still 200ml since they are also a bit narrower. But a study was done and it was discovered that after the foam settles there is a bit more than 200ml of beer in the glass, and this is causing losses at establishments using the new glasses. There are even claims already that the losses resulting from this have even put some establishments out of business already.

According to many Kölners, it is because Cologne gets its water from the Eifel (a protected nature preserve a few 10s of kilometers outside the city), and Düsseldorf gets it from the Rhein. 1 comments

With the pride of their city at stake, Köln brewmasters took gold and silver at the World Beer Cup in the style which bears their name. Erzquell Brauerei took the gold with their Zunft Kölsch, and Gaffel took silver with their namesake Kölsch. 2 comments

Erzquell Brauerei's Zunft Kölsch is one of the finalists in the prestigious World Beer Cup, held every two years. It will be extremely interesting to see how the judges place this archtype of the style against the numerous pseudo-Kölsches it will be up against. In our trip to Cologne in August 2000, we labelled this example of the style "most refreshing" of all 20 or so of the Kölsches we tasted.
