Beer MedicalThe New Scientist Magazine is reporting that there is a mystery compound in beer that fights cancer.

Scientists at a university in Japan have demonstrated that after injecting rats with known carcinogens (cancer causing agents) that the rats that were forced (OK that part is my interpretation) to consume non-alcoholic beer had a reduction in the damage that the carcinogens caused to their DNA by 85%. Damaged DNA is known to be a potential precursor to cancer.

Beer MedicalThe National Institute of Health in the US has done a comprehensive review of the literature regarding the health benefits and downfalls of alcohol. Published last month in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, they presented a summary that gives guidance to physicians on what to say to their patients when they are asked about drinking and how much or when they should / can drink.

Noting that alcoholism is still a major health problem, they concede that for certain people, alcohol consumed daily may be beneficial. Two drinks a day for men and one a day for women is linked to lower mortality and unlikely to harm, the review found, while men consuming more that four drinks a day (and 3 a day for women) was still considered bingeing and was not considered healty.

Beer MedicalThe oldest man in Germany - Hermann Dörnemann -celebrated his 111th birthday this year in relative privacy, with just a few family members and neighbours, when compared with the media circus around his 110th last year.

The secret of his longevity? Avoid exercise and drink a glass of Altbier every day. He's even been known to drink the water he boiled his potatoes in, since he says that's where all the vitamins are.

Beer MedicalThere is a Canada-wide recall on numerous brands of honey, including the popular Billy Bee brand sold at most major supermarkets. It seems that the problem honey originates in Argentina, but many Canadian produces blend their domestic honies with those from other countries, including Argentina. Some Australian brands are also affected by the recall as they also blend with Argentinian honey. What follows is verbatim from the website of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and is presented in conjunction with Health Canada.

Beer MedicalMy wife and I were married in July, 1983. On a sunny Sunday afternoon, a month or so before the wedding, we were sitting on the patio in her sister's back yard going over plans for the big event.

My soon-to-be brother in-law was serving the beer. I won't mention the brand. He had placed the cold bottles in those individual styrofoam bottle coolers and offered them around to us on a serving tray. Fate or luck of the draw determined our choice.

Beer MedicalBitter-tasting beer curbs the development of fat inside the body, researchers at Japan's top brewery have found.

A team of researchers led by Keiji Kondo, a vice chief of Kirin Brewery Co.'s development section, reached the conclusion after feeding a group of mice with high-fat feed containing isohumulones, an important component of hops that creates the bitter taste, and another group with plain high-fat feed.

Beer MedicalA major study released from Harvard University shows that men who have up to 4 drinks a day reduce their risk of heart attack. Furthermore, men who slightly increased their drinking over that period were found to have a 22 percent less chance of heart attack then men whose drinking remained constant. Though the doctor who conducted the study admits that exercise and controlling blood pressure are still more important factors in reducing heart attack.

Beer MedicalThe EU is funding a research project which is studying the possible connection between beer and a vitamin known as folate, which may reduce the risk of heart disease. And as part of the study men are being asked to drink a liter of beer a day. The only catch is that the beer they are drinking has no alcohol in it. The Institute of Food Research in Norwich is doing the study.
