Big rainbow trout from Lake Benmore
| Description: | Caught this one with a spinner (Tasmanian Devil) on Monday morning. Wow a fighter! That's a 6" ruler at the bottom left on the cooler lid. Most oldtimers say the rainbow's lose their stripe as they get older. I Dunno...not like Canada. Another guy said this was a landlocked salmon. Maybe you guys can help? |

Kiwi -
Thats definitely a trout. Salmon have much longer and more distinctive heads. It looks like it might be a rainbow from the speckling on the top. THere isn't a heap of difference between laketrout (landlocked salmon) and regular trout though...

Thanks Ziggy,
The rainbows here are a bit weak in the rainbow department!

I think it is a landlocked salmon. If you look at the tail, the shape and spotting over the whole tail says it's a salmon, not a trout. The coloration is just about like any salmon when it's in the ocean, so it's hard to tell. One of the tell all's is the gum line color and mouth color. It it was all white, then it's a rainbow trout. If it's all black, it's a landlocked chinook salmon. If it's a white gumline and black tongue then it's a landlocked coho.
