     JJ Palmer's Brewing Slide Rule

At top I've lined up my desired 1.050 gravity with the 65 minute boil that I normally do.
Then at bottom you can see I lined up my 10 gallon volume with the 28 IBUs that I want.

But uh-oh! I use low-alpha Tettnanger hops for this recipe, at 4.3% Alpha Acids.

If you locate 4.3 on the 2nd scale from the bottom, you look below it to find how much hops you need and there is nothing but blank space!

But that's OK because it is easy to fix. First remove the bottom slide and note all the blank space.

Now take a ruler and extend the line out almost to the end. A fine point felt tip marker is best to use

Now rotate the slide 180 degrees like the hands of a clock

Slide it in til the 2 and the 3 on the slide line up with the 2 and the 3 on the main body, which you can see in the far right of this photo

There, now you have it lined up so you can start copying the tick-marks from the body down onto the slide.

You can copy in as many as you like. Again, a felt-tipped fine point marker will work best, thought that is not what I used.

Now pull the slide back out and put it back in the right way and you are in business!
