I've been saying this for years, and it seems to finally be getting some coverage in the media now. The Beer Store monopoly is especially insulting to Ontarians now that it's 3 owners : Molson, Labatt and Sleeman, are no longer even Canadian owned! Here in Ontario we have handed over a beer monopoly to foreign interests, and as recent news reports show, this leads to much higher beer prices in Ontario.
What I have been calling for is to let all breweries in Ontario open their own retail outlets where ever they want. This is essentially allowing them to do exactly what we already allow Molson, Labatt and Sleeman to do. Yes, I know that other brewers can get their products into the Beer Store, but speak to any one of them and they will tell you horror stories of how difficult it is to accomplish. The Beer Store owners make the rules about who is allowed to sell in their stores. The owners are also in direct competition with other brewers. This is clearly a very serious conflict-of-interest situation which is allowed by the Ontario government.
Enough! It's time to allow all Ontario brewers to open their own retail outlets where ever they wish. It's time to level the playing field.
