Boycott French Wine in Support of Trappist Monks

Beer NewsBelgian Trappist Monks have broken their vow of silence and are speaking out against a new French tax on beers stronger than 8.5% alcohol. The levy was brought in unexpectedly at the end of last year, and according to government officials is intended to combat alcoholism.

However it is worthy to note that French wines have an even higher alcohol content than Trappist beers, and already enjoy much lower level of taxation than beer, even before this new tax. Since virtually no French brewers are affected by the tax, opponents I think rightfully accuse the French government of using protectionist tactics which go against the spirit of the EU.

In support of the Trappist Monks Bodensatz is calling for all homebrewers and beer drinkers to boycott French wine until this tax is removed.

Some of the biggest Breweries in Belgium have already watered down their brews in order to avoid the tax in France, which will effectively double the price of affected beers. But many are reluctant to change their traditional recipes, some of which are centuries old.

Spokesman for the monks Henroz Phillippe says that they have asked the European Commission to investigate, and they remain confident that a ruling will come down in their favour.

"If somebody wants to get drunk quickly" says Phillippe, "I guess they would go for a cheap wine rather than a specialist beer". Mr Phillippe also says that the Monks stand to lose 2.5 million Euros or about 4 million Canadian dollars a year in revenues.

Sure, I'll boycott french wine. In fact, all wine. I hate wine.

I love French wine, they're my favorite, but today I deliberately chose not to buy French wine. Instead I opted for Italian because this issue is too important to ignore.

There is also a few microbrewery in France that are affected by the law.

The wine lobby seems to be verry strong in France. Some say that they where behind the ban of absynth at the turn of the last century, circulating stories that it make people goes mad. These storeies never had been proved yet. The only problem of absynth was that it was getting too popular and winemaker where loosing sales.

This time it seems that the problem is that winemaker outside of France are now making products that are as good as the french but are less expensive so the french loose their exterior market. Since they can not do much about the international wine market, they seem to have found a new target that was slowly taking a bit of their share.

P.S: I'm no economist or something like that, my analyse of the situation is only based from bits and pieces of information gathered here and there. You can make what you want of it.

If its gotta be wine then I recommend a nice glass of Italien Chianti. Goes very well with a bit of liver ;)

I shall just finish off the stash of wine I have in the garage from last year and then I shall fully support the boycott - higher alcohol content drinks help people to forget how much they pay normally in taxes so should be taxed less if anything. Surely the government doesn't want the people staying sober enough to notice how much they tax?!?

Recent news: The French withdrew the proposed tax
after Belgium complained loudly to the EU. You can
now gladly return to drinking French wine, which should
be available on sale as the Yanks are still mad at
    Chirac over Iraq.

Now Denmark is upset with a new ruling over there that
only the Greeks can make Feta....

Pretty soon Labatts won't be able to make Pilsener...
oh, wait... what am I saying?
